PURPOSE: A composition containing Gentianae macrophyllae Radix extract for preventing or treating dental caries is provided to ensure excellent antibacterial effect with persistence and safety. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating dental caries contains 0.01-50 wt% of Gentianae macrophyllae Radix extract as an active ingredient, isolated using water or an organic solvent. The organic solvent is ethanol or an ethanol solution. The extract also includes a fraction which is prepared from the water extract of Gentianae macrophyllae Radix using an organic solvent. The organic solvent is ethylacetate or butanol. A health food for preventing or relieving dental caries contains the extract as an active ingredient. The health food is a food or beverage.
