PURPOSE: A device and method for operating an engine is provided to improve starting performance by operating an engine with alcohol on the basis of an ignition number and crank signal. CONSTITUTION: A device for operating an engine while a cold engine start comprises an auxiliary fuel tank(15), an engine control unit(11), an auxiliary fuel pump(17), and a auxiliary fuel shut-off valve(19). The engine control unit determines whether or not the cold engine start is in process on the basis of a coolant signal generated from a temperature sensor. If the cold engine start is in process, the engine control unit generates a fuel injection signal for discharging auxiliary fuel in the auxiliary fuel tank. The auxiliary fuel pump is operated according to the fuel injection signal, and discharges the fuel in the auxiliary fuel tank. The auxiliary fuel shut-off valve is installed along an auxiliary fuel supply line, and supplies the auxiliary fuel to a cylinder by controlling an auxiliary fuel supply.
