<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transponder that makes it easier for a manager to identify a fault location by using the transponder common to a relay device and a terminal station device. <P>SOLUTION: A transponder performs bidirectional conversion between a client side signal and a transmission channel side signal. The transponder includes a client side interface and a transmission channel side interface. Another client side interface or a client device is connectable to the client side interface. A connection determination section determines a connection destination of the client side interface.
