<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a failing nozzle even if a feed amount of a print medium is deviated due to any cause. <P>SOLUTION: A failing nozzle detecting apparatus includes: a reference image generation part for generating a plurality of reference image data obtained by respectively shifting pixel positions along a transport direction by offset amounts different from one another based on image data; and a reading part for reading images from print media relatively moved by a transport part to generate read image data. The failing nozzle detecting apparatus selects reference image data used for comparison with the read image data from among the plurality of reference image data.
