[Class 23] The separator comprises a rotary distributer 4 below the inlet 12, means to create fluid flow through the apparatus, rotary selector 15 which controls the size of panticle discharged through the outlet 22, and variable-speed mechanisms for driving the selector, distributor and fluid-current producing means. The latter in Fig. 1 is a fan or blower 20, beyond an adjustable throttle valve 27, driven by a pulley 21 independently of the rotary selector. The exhaust side of the fan 20 has a duct 23 'which delivers material that has passed between plates 16, on the rotary selector, tangentially into a collecting chamber C. Theouter shell 3, of the inner casing. extends well below vanes 25, which guide gases passing into an inner chamber S and may be arranged radially to slow down the' gases. Solids are thus caused to slide down the inner sides of walls 21, 311 to outlets 26, 24. The selector 15 has axial plates 16 extending to an upper plate 17, pillars 18 being arranged between the plates. In place. of the plates 16, which may be adjustable, other plates 31, Fig. 6 (not shown), containing holes may be used. To prevent leakage of dust-laden gas around the selector 15, the top plate of it it, 28, is provided with radial vanes 30 which cause an outward flow of gas.
