<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic image reading apparatus that can appropriately read images on various originals having different thicknesses by keeping a constant distance between the originals and an image reading section without changing a conveyance speed of the originals in the image reading section even when the originals have different thicknesses. <P>SOLUTION: In an automatic image reading apparatus 10, a supplied original P is conveyed to an image reading section 15 by a first roller 14 via a first conveyance path 13 that is downward curved. An image in the original is read in the image reading section. The original is then conveyed by a second roller 19 at a higher conveyance speed than that in the first roller, from the image reading section via a second conveyance path 18 that is upward curved.
