PURPOSE: A shape measuring apparatus for thick plates and a control method thereof are provided to reduce failures resulting from a shear position of a thick plate by enabling a shear control system to provide a shear position and a round position at the same time. CONSTITUTION: A shape measuring apparatus for thick plates comprises a sensor unit, a sensor driving unit, and a control unit. The sensor unit measures the width and length of a thick plate(50) by being moved along the width and length of the thick plate above the thick plate. The sensor driving unit moves the sensor unit along the width and length of the thick plate, and the sensor driving unit comprises a horizontal support, a vertical support, a rotating member which is connected to the underside of the vertical support to rotate the horizontal support in the transverse or longitudinal direction of the thick plate, and a rail moving unit which is installed on one side of a roller table and moves the rotating member in the longitudinal direction of the thick plate. The control unit operates the sensor driving unit to measure the width and length of the thick plate through the sensor unit and outputs a round position(R) of the thick plate to a shear control system.
