<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) of an internal combustion engine for accurately controlling an EGR rate in a transition state of the operation of the internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The method calculates the EGR rate E using intake air oxygen concentration Ci of an intake air passage 11a on a downstream side rather than a junction with an EGR passage 19 and exhaust oxygen concentration Ce of an exhaust gas passage 11b and controls an EGR valve 21 so that the calculated EGR rate Ec becomes a target EGR rate Et. In the method, the intake air oxygen concentration Ci is detected by an intake air oxygen concentration sensor 22 disposed in an intake air manifold 11a, and intake air pressure Pi is detected by an intake air pressure sensor 23 mounted on the intake air manifold 11a.
