PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an improvement in luminous efficiency, a reduction in driving voltage, and an improvement in emission life.

SOLUTION: In a display unit A of a display device, scanning lines 5 and data lines 6 orthogonally intersect each other in a lattice shape and are connected to pixels 3 at positions at which they orthogonally intersect each other. An organic electroluminescent element is used in each of the pixels 3. In the organic electroluminescent element, a light-emitting layer contains a compound represented by a general formula (1).
