<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser welding apparatus that directly measures a penetration depth of a weld part to accurately evaluate the quality of the weld part, and to provide a laser welding method. <P>SOLUTION: The laser welding apparatus for welding a weld part with a laser beam includes: a laser outputting means for emitting the laser beam; an optical interferometer that irradiates the weld part with an object beam that is light with a different wavelength from that of the laser beam and measures a penetration depth of the weld part from a reflected object beam from the weld part; an optical member that coaxially emits the laser beam emitted from the laser outputting means and the object beam emitted from the optical interferometer to the weld part; and an evaluation means for evaluating whether the weld part is failure or not based on the measured penetration depth of the weld part.
