<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide specific binding agents that interact with hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), methods for treating cancer by administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of a specific binding agent to HGF, and methods for detecting the amount of HGF in a sample using a specific binding agent to HGF. <P>SOLUTION: The invention provides: an isolated polypeptide comprising at least one complementarity determining region (CDR) selected from CDR1a, CDR2a, and CDR3a and, in association with an antibody heavy chain, capable of binding the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF); an isolated nucleic acid molecule that encodes a polypeptide comprising at least one complementarity determining region (CDR) selected from CDR1a, CDR2a, and CDR3a and, in association with an antibody heavy chain, capable of binding the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF); a host cell comprising the nucleic acid molecule; and a composition comprising a specific binding agent and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
