<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the dot representing a full stop in Japanese as generated by a conventional display device comes in oval form, and not in circular form, leading to poor character display quality. <P>SOLUTION: A display device comprises a character information extraction unit which extracts character information composed of character data and the character type of character data consisting of a standard or a middle-sized format from a digital broadcast wave, a storage unit which stores therein standard format font data, and a character control unit which generates characters in the standard or the middle-sized format on the basis of the character information by using the standard format font data and controls display of the characters generated in the standard or the middle-sized format. When the character type of character data is the middle-sized format, the character control unit generates characters in the standard format from character data whose character type is the middle-sized format.
