<p>An optical modulator is provided with: a base section inside which an insertion channel is formed, and an electrode pair mounted on the base section, a modulation voltage being applied to the electrode pair. A curved section, for causing an optical fiber to curve at a curvature at which light propagating through the optical fiber does not leak out when the modulation voltage is not applied, is formed in the insertion channel. The electrode pair is mounted in the vicinity of the curved section of the insertion channel, and is configured so that when the modulation voltage is applied, an electric field formed between the electrode pair extends to the optical fiber which may be positioned in the curved section. When a connection is to be made with an existing optical fiber, an optical fiber in which the core is formed from a material having an electro-optical effect is inserted into the insertion channel.</p> |
