In a process for the direct reduction of iron ore, a reducing gas and the ore are passed in counter current through a furnace, the used gases are burned with an oxygen rich gas over or in an incandescent bed of carbonaceous fuel and the regenerated reducing gases are recycled to the furnace. The reducing gases may be carbon monoxide or hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The regenerated gases may be preheated by combustion of part of the used gases from the furnace. The bed of carbonaceous fuel may be kept incandescent and supply heat for the regeneration by burning part of it with 80 per cent oxygen. The used gases may be dried before regeneration, in which case carbon monoxide alone is the reducing gas.
|
