The aim of the invention is to provide a locking device for a motor vehicle and an assembly method. Said aim is achieved by a locking device for a flap, wherein the flap is pivotably fastened directly or indirectly to a body having a recess. The locking device comprises an actuator, which is preferably attached to the body having the recess. The locking element comprises preferably a locking arm for locking the flap and an actuating arm that is preferably short compared to the locking arm, wherein the locking arm and the actuating arm can be pivoted about a common axis. The actuator can pivot the actuating arm in order to lock and/or unlock the flap.
