The combustion method involves initiating a flame front combustion by corana-ignition and initiating an area firing combustion by the flame front combustion. A nitrogen oxide-poor combustion is initiated by the corana-ignition. The corana-ignition is generated at an electrode tip in the combustion chamber of its high voltage in connection with a strongly non-uniform electric field distribution. An independent claim is included for a piston engine with a corana-ignition unit.
