The purpose of the present invention is to provide a defoaming agent having exceptional defoaming properties across a wide temperature range and having exceptional product stability. The present invention is a defoaming agent characterized in having, as essential components, hydrophobic dry silica (S) obtained by hydrophobizing silica obtained using a dry method and having a primary particle diameter of 5-100 nm, water, and a hydrophobic liquid (Q) containing 1-25% by weight of an ester compound (E) expressed by the formula (R1-COO)p-D, where: R1 is an alkyl or an alkenyl; D is a residue excluding a hydroxyl contributing to an ester bond from a compound (D') containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and 1 to 6 hydroxyls, or a residue excluding a hydroxyl contributing to a ester bond from an adduct obtained by adding alkylene oxide to the compound (D'); and p is an integer from 1 to 3. |
