The instrument has a pressure channel (6) whose front part is connected with a back-pressure chamber (8). A pneumatic medium in a striking element (10) can flow in the back-pressure chamber as the striking element is accelerated toward a transfer element (2). A quick-action valve (16) releases the pneumatic medium under an operating pressure into the pressure channel, and a control circuit (17) controls an opening period of the valve dependent on a striking frequency or a combination of parameters that is selected from the operating pressure or pressure in the back-pressure chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for generating shock wave-like pressure waves in an instrument for providing treatment of biological tissue.
