The device has a heat exchanger (30) arranged between a heat exchanger (10) of an external combustion engine and a main flow channel (11) such that flue gas current (R) does not contact the latter heat exchanger. The former heat exchanger comprises a cavity (31) through which an airflow (L) is flowable. A secondary flow channel (32) is formed between the heat exchangers. The former heat exchanger and the secondary flow channel form a preheating device (50) to heat the airflow, where the cavity is arranged in the direction of the airflow in front of the secondary flow channel. The heat exchanger is made of metal or ceramic. An independent claim is also included for a method for preventing deposits in a heat exchanger.
