A method and system for processing a print job within a printing network, comprises collecting 13 the device status of at least one printer in the printing network, determining 20 the energy consumption for printing the print job on the at least one printer, and displaying 24 the energy consumption to a user. If the energy consumption of more than one printer is displayed, the user may be able to select 12 a printer. The device status may include the different energy consumption levels of the printer (different modes such as off, sleep, idle, busy) and the duration time of the current consumption level of the printer. The user may be notified when the energy consumption for printing the print job on a printer is above a predefined threshold, and the user may be directed (by map or other information) to an alternative printer.
