The ballast has a rectifier (07) for rectifying an alternating current (AC) voltage of an alternating current voltage source into a direct current (DC) voltage. An inverter (11) inverts the DC voltage into another AC voltage that is supplied to a gas discharge lamp, where frequency of the latter AC voltage is variable. The rectifier rectifies a single-phase AC voltage of the voltage source. A filter (03) has two single-stage individual filters (04, 06) and is provided for radio interference suppression of the former AC voltage. An independent claim is also included for a circuit arrangement for operating spatially distributed gas discharge lamps at an alternating current voltage source.
