A rope gripping device 10 comprises a housing 12 to receive a rope 24 extending therethrough, an eccentric cam 38 mounted within the housing 12 for rotation about an axis 40 orthogonal to the extent of the rope 24, the cam 38 having a first gripping surface 36, a base grip 30 mounted within the housing 12 for rotation about an axis 34 parallel to the rotation axis 40 of the cam 38, the base grip 30 supporting a second gripping surface 26 in an opposed configuration to the first gripping surface 36 to define a space for receiving the rope for gripping, a spring acting on the cam 38 to bias rotation of the cam in a direction that brings gripping 26, 36 surfaces closer together to grip the received rope 24, and a slidable coupling, preferably a pin 42 and slot 44, between the cam 38 and the base grip 30 such that rotation of the cam 38 under the action of the spring pulls the base grip 30 to rotate it in the same direction as the rotation of the cam 38, thereby moving the second gripping surface 26 closer to the first gripping surface 36. The device may have a removable module unit 20 (figs 5 and 6) containing the cam 38 and base grip 30, to allow ease of cleaning of the mechanism. |
