[Class 142 (iii)] The box is driven positively in both directions through a yielding safety device from a star wheel Q turned by rollers o<3> on a wheel o<2> driven by spur-and-bevel gearing o<1>, o, m<3>, M, m, l<1>, l, j<1> from a shaft J mounted in a bracket K on the swing rail L and a bearing d<5> in a bracket D. A bevel wheel j on the shaft extends between two bevel wheels G, G<1> slidably and loosely mounted on the tappet shaft E. By means of clutch fork levers F, F<1> operable by rods A, A<1> controlled by a dobby or card control mechanism, one or the other of the bevel wheels can be moved so that dog teeth on inner bosses thereon engage a dog clutch H rotating with the shaft E, the bevel wheel also being moved into gear with the bevel j, which is thus turned in one direction or the other. Studs or screws on the clutch levers may engage a slotted link whereby the simultaneous engagement of both bevel wheels with the dog clutch H is prevented. The bevel wheels are normally moved into inoperative position by a spring F<2>, and teeth on their outer bosses then engage dog teeth d2, d<3>, on the tappet shaft bearings d<4>. Spring-pressed balls or plungers on the bracket D engage notches in the boss of the bevel gear to prevent this and the shaft J from working out of position when the bevel wheel is out of gear with the bevel wheels G, G<1>. The loose star wheel Q has locking concave surfaces q<1>, engaging a boss o<4> on the wheel O, and arms q<3> projecting from a boss q<2> on the star wheel carry spring-pressed balls &c. q<4> engaging internal recesses S in a flange s<1> on a disc S fixed to the shuttle box shaft R, which can thereby thus be rotated. The drive yields in case the shuttle traps and also enables the box to be turned by hand in either direction. The bevel gearing from the swing rail may be replaced by a chain drive &c.
