<PICT:0493472/IV/1> A ball joint comprises a socket 10 having a part-spherical interior surface with which a bearing element 21 of synthetic resin, carried by the ball member or stud 17, slidably cooperates; the socket may also contain a second bearing member 28 of synthetic resin which slidably co-operates with the member 17. In the form shown, the stud 17 has a cylindrical part rotatable in the bearing member 21, which is formed in two halves and is supported by a washer resting on a flange near the lower end of the stud 17; the end of the stud is part-spherical, fitting into a corresponding recess in the member 28, and the latter member is pressed upwards by a spring 30, bearing on a socket-closing plate, to hold the parts in bearing engagement. The use of synthetic resin avoids the need for lubrication and for special dirt-excluding precuations. Specification 467,789, [Group XXV], is referred to. |
