The device has an arm (6) pivotally mounted about a fixed axis (7). The axis is spaced from each of two longitudinal edges (4a) of a sheet metal blank (4). An end (6a) of the arm rests under one of the edges of the blank in one position to support the blank due to gravitational force (F) exerted on the edge. The arm pivots under the action of force exerted on the edge of the blank opposite to the gravitational force to another position where the arm is free from the edge of the blank. An independent claim is also included for a stamping press.
