<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying apparatus and an image forming apparatus capable of correcting a skew feed of a sheet without generating paper wrinkles or the like at a transfer portion in the downstream part etc. regardless of the thickness of a conveyed sheet. <P>SOLUTION: A sheet conveying apparatus includes a shutter member 19a against which the tip of a sheet S to be conveyed abuts for skew feed correction, and which is pressed and moved by the sheet. The sheet conveying apparatus includes an operating cam 34 which holds the shutter member at a retracted position at which the member is retracted from a sheet conveying path until the tip of the sheet being conveyed by a pair of conveying rollers 13 is clamped by the transfer nip in the downstream part of the pair of conveying rollers.
