The engine (1) has an exhaust gas recirculation system (13) for recirculation of gas from an exhaust system (3) to an intake system (2). A compressed-air reservoir (10) returns the gas to intake system through a venturi device (12). The compressed-air reservoir is connected to a discharge valve (20) through a withdrawal system (27) formed by an engine brake valve. The output pipes (21) are connected to removal lines (22) that are connected to compressed-air reservoir such that the gas from a working chamber (19) is made to flow into compressed-air reservoir during engine brake operation. An independent claim is included for a method for operating internal combustion engine.
