<p>This invention relates, in a general sense, to the recovery of Mg(OH) 2 from barren liquors, formed by base metal precipitation, that normally accumulate in a tailings dam. The invention provides a method of recovering Mg(OH) 2 from a liquor formed in a base metal precipitation circuit, which includes the steps of: a) using Mg(OH) 2 to precipitate base metal from a liquor which contains a base metal-sulphate, thereby producing a solution which contains Mg2+; (b) precipitating Mg2+ by the addition of lime to the solution, thereby producing a stream which contains Mg(OH) 2 and gypsum; and (c) separating Mg(OH) 2from gypsum in the stream.
