<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner that can prevent inability to move when side brushes are caught by an obstacle on the floor. <P>SOLUTION: In a vacuum cleaner 11, side brushes 18 having brush bristles 32b that contact the floor F are rotatably provided ahead of an intake on the bottom of a body case 12. The vacuum cleaner 11 has an obstacle-detection means 21 that detects whether there is, beneath the body case 12, a rug R that would impede autonomous movement.
