<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material conveying device for preventing multi-feed and reducing the distance between sheets during continuous paper feed as compared with a conventional sheet material conveying device, and to provide an image reading apparatus, and an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The amount of documents being conveyed is calculated when an encoder Sn2 as a rear-end detector detects a rear end of the document. The encoder Sn2 adds the calculated amount of documents to a "total amount of documents conveyed" only when rotation of a detection roller 301 as an accompanying member is stopped.
