[Class 38 (iv)] The filament of a heat radiator such as an incandescent filament lamp operated in common with a mercury high - pressure arc discharge tube is supplied with current of a limited voltage during the starting or running up period by making the voltage dependent upon anindependent source and also upon the working conditions of the discharge tube. In the arrangements shown in Fig. 1, in which the filament 6 is located in the discharge tube 1, the electrodes of the discharge lamp are supplied from the A.C. source 3 through the secondary winding 5 of a transformer, while the filament 6 is supplied from the same source through the secondary winding 7 which is close coupled with primary winding 4. The filament voltage is, however, also dependent upon the current in the discharge circuit through the medium of the additional transformer 8, the secondary winding of which is opposed to the winding 7. In a modification, Fig. 3, the additional transformer is replaced by a further secondary winding 19 close coupled with winding 5. To prevent overloading of the filament should the arc fail to strike or be extinguished during the starting period, a main switch 11 is closed by winding 12 in the discharge tube circuit in conjunction with switch 13 which may short-circuit the discharge tube. When starting, switches 13 and 11 are closed by hand in succession and the operating button then released, thereby open. ing switch 13. Switch 11 remains closed, however, as long as winding 12 is energized by current flowing through the discharge tube.
