The grinding roll according to the invention for a high-pressure roll mill has surface profiling having a multiplicity of wear-resistant profile bodies which are arranged at a distance from each other on the roll surface, wherein the surface profiling is provided both in a central region and in two adjacent edge regions of the grinding roll, so that autogenous wear protection is formed in the edge regions and in the central region. The number of profile bodies per unit surface area in the edge regions is greater than in the central region, and the free space between profile bodies in the edge regions is at least 15%, preferably more than 25%, less than the free space between the profile bodies in the central region.
