The present technology relates to a recording device, a recording method, a play device, a play method, a program, and a record/play device, with which it is possible to provide play control information with which it is possible to play a stream according to play capability. A recording device of a first aspect of the present technology comprises: a first generation unit which generates information, as play control information of a first video stream which includes a base stream which is obtained by encoding prescribed images of a plurality of images of different viewpoints and a dependent stream which is obtained by encoding other images including pictures wherein pictures of the base stream are encoded as reference images, said information having version information set to be the same as version information of play control information of a second video stream which is encoded with the same encoding method as the encoding method of the base stream; and a recording control unit which records the first video stream and the play control information of the first video stream on a recording medium.
