PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine that includes a variable compression ratio mechanism and operates in a stable manner when a compression ratio is changed.

SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine includes the variable compression ratio mechanism capable for changing a mechanical compression ratio, and a residual gas remaining in a combustion chamber while not being exhausted in the combustion cycle contains an unburnt gas and a burnt gas. The internal combustion engine estimates a ratio between the unburnt gas and the burnt gas contained in the residual gas upon a transient operation in which the mechanical compression ratio has been changed. The internal combustion engine regulates an amount of new gaseous mixture newly supplied to the combustion chamber in this combustion cycle so that an amount of unburnt gaseous mixture filling the combustion chamber in the combustion cycle is approximately equal to an amount upon a steady operation in which the mechanical compression ratio is substantially constant.
