<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal coated optical fiber with a coating layer easily manufactured. <P>SOLUTION: A metal coated optical fiber 10 comprises: an optical fiber 11 consisted of a core 11a formed of quartz doped with a refractive index enhancing dopant, such as germanium, and a clad 11b formed of quartz doped with a refractive index lowering dopant, such as fluorine; a metal layer 12 provided to cover an outer peripheral surface of the optical fiber 11; and a coating layer 13 provided to cover the metal layer 12.
