[Problem] To provide a method for obtaining heat ray-blocking microparticles having high light resistance without using an insulating inert substance, a dispersion containing the heat ray-blocking microparticles obtained by the method, a coating composition, and a coated member that uses the coating composition. [Solution] The method for producing surface-modified heat ray-blocking microparticles comprises (a) a step for the dry crushing and/or wet crushing of crystalline heat ray-blocking microparticles having a primary grain size of 5 to 100 nm and (b) a step for subjecting the pulverized heat ray-blocking microparticles obtained by step (a) to dispersion in water and then hydrothermal treatment at 200 to 320ºC.
