PURPOSE: A method for preparing montelukast which is a leukotriene inhibitor is provided to easily prepare montelukast or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing montelukast of chemical formula 1 or montelukast sodium comprises: a step of reacting diol compounds of chemical formula 2 with a leaving group precursor and selectively introducing the leaving group to a secondary alcohol of the diol compounds to prepare an intermediate compound of chemical formula 6; and a step of coupling the intermediate compound with 1(mercaptomethyl)cyclopropane acetic acid derivatives of chemical formula 4. The leaving group precursor is p-toluene sulfonyl isocyanate or isopropenyl chloroformate.
