A method for providing data by a server device to a client device, corresponding to a given video, each frame of the video being divided into n (integer) spatial tiles (image regions) 600, to create n independent video sub-tracks, comprises generating a description file (Manifest, or Media Presentation Description (MPD) file: Figure 8) including data about the spatial organization of the n video sub-tracks, and at least n URLs (HTTP Internet addresses) respectively designating each video sub-track. The description file is transmitted to the client device, and video data is transmitted corresponding to the video sub-tracks based on one or more client device requests, each request comprising one of the URLs. URLs may be selected (by the client device) according to a chosen region of interest (ROI). The description file may comprise a URL designating a full video frame, i.e. not a sub-image. The system can be applied to scalable video coding (SVC), with base (BL) and enhancement (EL) layers. URLs may designate video tracks for predefined time periods. Streaming according to the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) standard may be used. |
