PURPOSE: A real-time map data update system by a layer data unit and a method for the same are provided to update map data by a plurality of layer data units on a real time basis, thereby reducing user waiting time and guiding a route based on latest geographic information. CONSTITUTION: A real-time map data update system by a layer data unit comprises a service device(100) and a terminal device(200). The service device sorts information expressing a map into a plurality of attributes and constitutes map data with a plurality of layer data displaying the information sorted by corresponding attributes. The service device manages an update version of the map data per the plurality of layer data and provides the map data of a latest version according to an operation state of the terminal device. The terminal device performs a route guide function base on built-in map data. The terminal device transmits a map data update request and the operation state information of the terminal device to the service device and receives the map data of the latest version from the service device by the layer data unit and renews the built-in map data on a real time basis.
