PURPOSE: A water cooling type discharge lamp unit is provided to prevent degradation of the wall side of a retention block by radiating ultraviolet light from an end portion of a water cooling pipe. CONSTITUTION: An outer tube(4) of a high pressure discharge lamp(2) is inserted into the outer circumference of a discharge tube. A water cooling pipe covers around the outer tube of the high pressure discharge lamp. A cooling water path is formed between the water cooling pipe and the high pressure discharge lamp. A retention block is detachably installed to both ends of the high pressure discharge lamp. An ultraviolet light shielding member is installed on an end portion of the water cooling pipe. The ultraviolet light shielding member is comprised of heat resisting ceramic paint.
