PURPOSE: A light emitting diode including an active layer with a saw tooth shaped energy band gap is provided to maximize the confinement of a hole and an electron entering to the active layer since an energy band gap of the active layer has a saw tooth shape which successively increases and decreases. CONSTITUTION: An n-type clad layer(12) is formed on a conductive substrate(10). An active layer(14) is formed on the n-type clad layer. A p-type cladding layer(16) is formed on the active layer. A p-type electrode(18) is formed on the p-type cladding layer. An n-type electrode(20) is formed on a rear side of the conductive substrate.
