Provided is a fault current limiter that uses a superconductor and that, after a fault current limiting operation, can rapidly revert to a superconducting state. The fault current limiter carries out fault current limiting operations using a superconductor, and superconducting members (members formed from a retention vessel (11), filling material, and superconducting wire material) that include the superconductor, a cooling vessel (10), and a suppression means (fins (12)) are provided. The cooling vessel (10) holds the superconducting members inside, and also holds a cooling medium (14) for cooling the superconducting members. When the cooling medium (14) boils on the surface (retention vessel (11) surface) of the superconductor members because the superconductor temperature increases during a fault current limiting operation, the suppression means (fins (12)) suppresses a transition of the boiling state of the cooling medium (14) from a nuclear boiling state to a film boiling state.
