A sensor (10) for detecting fingerprints is provided having a first substrate (13) and a second substrate (14), a two-dimensional array (11) of sensing elements (17, 17a) formed on the first substrate (13), and a plurality of thin-film transistors (16) for controlling the sensing elements (17, 17a) at pixel location (15) along the array (11). Each of the sensing elements (17, 17a) detects one of electrical signals, temperature, or light, via one of the first or second substrates, representative of one or more fingerprints. The top of the second substrate (14) or the bottom of the first substrate (13) may provide a platen (18) upon which one or more fingers (20) can be disposed. The sensor (10) may be utilized in a fingerprint scanner (8) having processor(s) (22) driving sensing elements and reading from sensing elements (17, 17a) analog signals representative of fingerprint(s) in generating a fingerprint image. |
