The ring has two ring-joint ends (14) spaced from each other by a gap (15). A groove (16) extends in a circumferential direction, and is provided in a region of the ring-ends in a ring running surface (13). The groove is filled with a coating agent i.e. physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating after a subsequent coating of the running surface. Length of the groove is about 2-10 times of axial height of the running surface. The groove comprises constant depth throughout of the groove length, where the depth is about 10-30 micrometer. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a piston ring.
