<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a window opening and closing device for opening and closing a sliding door, by rotating a handle, fixed to a window frame in an openable and closable state with a hanging metal fitting, having a reduced projection amount from the window frame toward inside a room. <P>SOLUTION: A device body 6 extending in the width direction of a window frame 2 has an upper face part 9 arising to the surface of the window frame and a mounting plate part 10 accommodated in the window frame. The mounting plate 10 is surrounded by a bracket 14. The main body 6 has a worm shaft 20 extending in the direction toward inside a room. A wheel gear 25 in engagement with the worm 21 of the worm shaft is fixed to the mounting plate part 10. A rack gear 27 which is in engagement with the wheel gear 25 and reciprocally moves in the width direction is provided in the bracket 14.
