This light diffusion member is provided with: a light transmissive substrate; a plurality of light diffusion sections formed on one surface of the substrate; a light shielding layer formed at a region differing from the region of formation of the light diffusion sections at the one surface of the substate; and light scattering bodies. The light diffusion sections have a light exit end surface at the substrate side and a light entrance end surface that is at the reverse side from the substrate side and that has a greater area than the area of the light exit surface. The height from the light entrance surface to the light exit surface of the light diffusion sections is greater than the layer thickness of the light shielding layer. The light scattering bodies are disposed further to the light exit side than the light diffusion sections are.
