<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manage more characters without pressing multiple times. <P>SOLUTION: An overlay keypad is adapted to fit over a keypad 620. The keypad includes keys 625 that can be selectively coupled electrically with a printed circuit board to create electrical signals corresponding to characters input to a portable wireless device 600. Each of the keys further includes a plurality of contact points, and each of the contact points can be separately electrically coupled with the printed circuit board to input a character associated with that contact point. The keypad can be switched between a single mode in which all the contact points for a given key refer to the same input character and a multimode in which each of the contact points for a given key refer to a different input character. Further, at least some of the contact points of each of the keys can be programmed by a user to assign a desired character to a specific contact point. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
