<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water heater which suppresses flowing out of foreign matter such as scale from a heat source machine to a side supplied with hot water. <P>SOLUTION: The water heater includes: the heat source machine (heat pump unit 200) heating water and supplying hot water; and a flow passage switching means (three-way valve 400) having a filter part for removing foreign matter, the switching means connected to a hot water supplying pipe 10f through which hot water supplied from the heat source machine passes, a boiling pipe 11a and a bypass pipe 11b. The flow passage switching means can switch between a first mode in which the hot water supplying pipe 10f is communicated with the boiling pipe 11a to pass the hot water from the heat source machine to the boiling pipe 11a, and a second mode in which the hot water supplying pipe 10f is communicated with the bypass pipe 11b to pass the hot water from the heat source machine to the bypass pipe 11b.
