The method involves detecting a rear-end collision of a vehicle (1). A seat backrest (2.1) of a vehicle seat (2) is moved in a direction of an occupant (3) using an electromotor (5) for adjusting an individual sitting position by power supply voltage and for adjusting the seat backrest in the direction of the occupants with a high power supply voltage when the rear-end collision of the vehicle is detected. The adjustment is performed such that an impulse is transmitted to the occupant by the seat backrest and the occupant is moved in a traveling direction of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for protecting occupants of a vehicle.
