Provided is a method for producing a fluorine-containing copolymer which is capable of providing an ion exchange membrane that is suppressed in decrease of the current efficiency due to impurities in a starting material aqueous alkali chloride solution that is used in electrolysis of an aqueous alkali chloride solution or the like. A method for producing a fluorine-containing copolymer, which comprises a step of cleaning a fluorine-containing copolymer of a fluorine-containing olefin and a fluorine-containing monomer having a carboxylic acid functional group with a cleaning solvent that contains a fluorine-based solvent at a temperature that is not lower than 40°C but not higher than the boiling point of the cleaning solvent.
